Health Pathways Project

Participants of the KAMS Health Pathways Project (HPP) will be supported through different kinds of learning and work opportunities, such as training, mentoring, work experience, professional development and chances to connect with peers. The support each person receives will depend on where they are in their health career journey and what their goals are.

Program Details

The KAMS Health Pathways Project (HPP) aims to improve access to health industry training and employment by removing barriers, adding supports and creating improved and sustainable career pathways, from the entry level of training to succession planning at executive levels. This project is funded by the National Indigenous Australian's Agency (NIAA) under their Indigenous Skills and Employment Program (ISEP). The Health Pathways Project contibutes to Closing the Gap targets by improving education and employment opportunities for our people.

Activities fall into three streams.

Stream 1 – Training Access and Support - This stream is for people who want to start working in the health workforce.

Activities include:

  • Solid Connections 1 & 2 (hyperlink to page) - Two different short courses to help participants brush up on reading, writing, maths and digital skills, undertake some training and prepare for entry to work or training. Theses courses are designed to be place based, delivered in a relaxed, informal style and run for three days per week over 5 weeks.
  • Certificate II in Community Health and Wellbeing (hyperlink to page) - Accredited training for entry-level work, or a pathway to further study.
  • Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Support Officer - A qualified mental health professional will support KAMS students in a culturally safe and holistic way, and refer students to other services when needed.

Stream 2 - Work readiness This stream helps people get ready for work.

Activities include:

  • Work Experience - Opportunities to gain experience in real workplaces. Solid Connections participants can undertake work experience in a KAMS or member services area of interest. Work placement is also a requirement for Certificate II in Community Health and Wellbeing students.
  • Peer Mentoring - Students can access mentors - people with similar work and life experiences who can give helpful guidance. Mentors may be offered training, take part in yarning circles, and join a community of practice to keep learning and sharing. This activity is being piloted at KAMS RTO in 2026.

Stream 3 - Retention and development This stream supports people who are already working in health to stay in their jobs and grow their careers.

Activities include:

  • Aboriginal Health Practitioner Graduate Program - A six-month program designed to build the skills and confidence of health practitioners. It includes professional development opportunities and a chance to learn and gain experience across different areas of health. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from each other.
  • Solid Leadership - Three programs to identify and nuture emerging leaders within KAMS and its Member Services, and support those who have already been tasked with managerial roles to undertake learning and development opportunities. These programs focus on developing key leadership competencies and enhancing problem-solving skills
