Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice (Course HLT40221 - Release 1)

This qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working to provide a range of clinical primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities, including specific health care programs, advice and assistance with, and administration of, medication.

Course Details

These workers can be expected to flexibly assume a variety of job roles and undertake a broad range of tasks either individually or as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

This qualification addresses the specific legislative responsibilities of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners and is required for national registration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia.

This qualification supersedes the previous HLT40213 qualification and is not equivalent.

Course Delivery

The Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice will be delivered at KAMS RTO in Broome, over a period of up to 18 months which consists of 10 two-week blocks and 2 three-week blocks of face to face, classroom delivery and approximately 14 weeks of work placement.

  • HLTINF006 Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control
  • HLTPOP031 Provide information and support on environmental health issues
  • HLTAHCS004 Complete comprehensive physical health assessments
  • HLTAADV002 Support the rights and needs of clients
  • HLTPAT002 Perform venous blood collections
  • HLTAWOR004 Provide support to address social and cultural determinants of client and community health
  • CHCCOM002 Use communication to build relationships
  • HLTASEW002 Assess and support the social and emotional wellbeing of clients
  • HLTAWOR002 Work in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care
  • HLTAHPR007 Promote lifestyle change
  • HLTAHCS006 Implement complex health care plans
  • HLTOHC007 Recognise and respond to oral health issues
  • HLTAMED002 Support the safe use of medications
  • HLTAMED003 Administer medications
  • HLTAHCS011 Provide support to clients experiencing alcohol and other drugs problems
  • HLTAWOR003 Use and promote reflective practice in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care

Work Placement

Students will be required to complete a total of 500 hours of work placement within clinical and non-clinical settings.

Work placements will be arranged in the students’ local communities wherever possible.  

Entry Requirements

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services requires entrants to be 18 years of age and provide a certified copy or original of photo ID.

Entrants must provide or be able to obtain:

  • National Police Clearance
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC)
  • Immunisation records including proof of COVID-19 vaccination

Acceptance into this Certificate IV level course will be subject to the result of a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills Assessment.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification.

Fees & Charges for 2026

This course has been announced by the Department of Training & Workforce Development as Fee Free in 2026.

The Student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as resource fees and other fees.

Where tuition fees are due, Certificates and Statement of Attainments will be withheld until payment for the enrolled training has been made in full.
